The Woonsocket Harris Public is a Studio Rhode Challenge Winner! 

We are proud to announce that our library has been awarded the State of  RI’s Studio Rhode Next Generation Library Challenge. Studio Rhode is an initiative of the RI Office of Library and Information Services and the RI Office of Innovation. 

We have been awarded with Apple technology and a new digital creation studio lab!

This Summer, we will be launching a multigenerational, multicultural storytelling project called “My Woonsocket Life” to share, through our personal stories, both the proud history of the City and its culturally rich present. We will be using digital media to document the City’s past, its present, and our hopes for its future. 

Our goal is to empower our community to play an active  role in the City Planning Department’s vision for the City’s future. With this new technology, our residents will learn new skills and use digital tools to help create a collective identity for Woonsocket.

Woonsocket Spotlight: Studio Rhode Interviews Community Care Alliance CEO Ben Lessing

Woonsocket, RI --- On October 4, 2017, the Studio Rhode team had the opportunity to interview Ben Lessing, Chief Executive Officer of Community Care Alliance.  In the interview, Lessing spoke at great length about his experience with Community Care Alliance, the challenges he sees in Woonsocket, and his greater vision for the city. Community Care Alliance has worked to empower people challenged by economic insecurity, mental illness and addictions, housing issues, and other trauma-related concerns. They provide counseling, treatment and support services; food, shelter and housing; programs to assist with self-sufficiency such as employment, financial iteracy and vocational training; and support for self help. The organization has over 125 years of experience of working to strengthen families, individuals and the community.  Lessing noted that his fondest memory in Woonsocket was his role in helping grow the annual ShelterWalk since his arrival in the year 2000. Contributed by Studio Rhode Team Member Margaret McNulty On January 23, 2017, Governor Gina Raimondo announced   the Studio Rhode Next Generation Libraries Challenge, an innovative approach to supporting public libraries with new technology and training to engage with Rhode Islanders in the digital age.  After examining the application details of the Studio Rhode Next Generation Library Challenge initiative, a partnership of the  RI Office of Innovation and the RI Office of Library and Information Services , Leslie Page, the Harris Library Executive Director, approached me with an enterprising idea to re-imagine the Harris Library.  How could we better serve our community and transform the library from a traditional library into a community hub through the use of technology?
